Confidence – what is it?
Confidence is your belief in your ability to perform in your sport. Confidence can be bolstered by others who believe in us, but ultimately, we must believe in our own abilities to be able to get out there and perform at our best.
Research suggests there are 12 main sources of confidence,
Previous performances and skills mastered
Extensive preparation.
Vicarious experiences.
Verbal persuasion.
Trust and advisers and coaches.
Environment, comfort, and familiarity.
Social support.
Innate factors so feeling naturally talented.
Athletes’ perspective, believing everything is going well.
Physiological traits ie, interpreting nerves as excitement and not anxiety.
Self-presentation, how they see themselves.
Competitive advantage being experienced in runs and races achieving pbs/success.
